World War Two fighters with big, round radial engines and tail wheels required ground crew personnel to ride on the wing to act as a taxi guide because the pilot could not see over the nose of the airplane. Probably one of the most famous photographs of the time shows Glenn Eagleston's P-47 taxiing in from a mission with the taxi guide on the wing.
