Andrew Douglas Farquhar, a stcokbrocker in Glasgow, joined the Auxiallary Air Force in 1927. By January 1939 he was commander of 602 squadron and led them into their first air battle on 16 October 1939. That day Farquhar clamied a third of a Heinkel damaged a half an He 111 destroyed in action over the Firth of Forth. Along with 603 Squadron's claims these were the first Luftwaffe bombers shot down by RAF Spitfires. Farquhar would not score again until 9 Febraury 1940 when he damaged an He 111 (1H+EN) belongining to 5/KG 26 that signaled surrender by lowering the undercarriage. The Heinkel was then forced to land and captured. On the 22nd Farquhar, along with P/O Victor Proudman, shot down another Heinkel (T5+OH) that crash landed near St Abb's Head. Farquhar, in an effort to capture this bomber intact as well, attempted to land alongside, but instead wound up upside down in his harness after nosing over. The Luftwaffe crew helped the Squadron Leader out of the crippled Spitfire only after setting fire to their own airplane. Farquhar flew Spitfire K9962 in all of the afore mentioned sorties.
